Laura's Testimonial: A Term at West Buckland School

For me, the best thing about boarding at West Buckland School has been creating a family with the other boarders. You’re always with them and, over time, you learn a lot about each other. You connect most with your roommate and those in your year or corridor because you see them regularly both at school and around the house. Additionally, you form friendships with students from other countries—connections you might never have had the chance to make otherwise.

Boarding has helped me grow as a person by making me more independent. It’s taught me to make decisions for myself and set my own limits, something I relied on my parents for when I lived at home in Barcelona. This independence has been a valuable part of my experience.

My best memories at West Buckland are countless because every day is different and an opportunity to learn. If I had to choose, I’d say the weekend trips are my favourite. Activities like surfing, go-karting and quad biking were so much fun and well-organised. I shared these amazing moments with friends, which made them even more special.

I would describe boarding life at WBS as family, home and fun. You arrive not knowing many people, but you soon become friends with everyone in the boarding house and even with students in Boyer and Parkers. They all make you feel at home and like part of a family, supporting and helping you through everything. We share so many fun times together, making jokes and creating lasting memories. Even if you feel homesick at first, you end up not wanting to leave.

To anyone considering boarding, I’d say, Go for it! You’ll love it and never regret it. I’ve cherished every second here, even during challenging moments. I’d also recommend joining as many activities as possible—both at school and in boarding, during weekdays and weekends. With so many opportunities, you’ll always find something fun and rewarding to do.

Lastly, I want to highlight the effort the boarding community puts into organising activities. Weekend trips to places like Clarks Village, Bath and Affinity Outlet, as well as regular trips to Barnstaple for essentials, are fantastic. Other weekend activities like quad biking, pottery painting and arts and crafts are so exciting. On weekdays, activities like baking pizza, playing volleyball, building gingerbread houses and enjoying events like the Christmas Ball have been incredible. It’s clear that a lot of thought and care goes into creating these experiences, and they’ve been a highlight of my time here.
