In January 2023, Barcelona was selected to be the first ever European Capital of Democracy, thanks to its excellence in democratic innovation and citizen participation.
As part of the celebration of this year-long programme, from September 2023 to November 2024, student ambassadors of the European Parliament from Sant Ignasi have participated in youth debates on democracy, hosted by the Sant Gabriel school in Barcelona.
The aim of these debates is to foster the growth and maturity of the young participants, with a view to promoting values such as tolerance, democracy, independence and responsibility, in line with those of the European Union.
The programme has specific objectives:
- Raising awareness of European parliamentary democracy and European citizenship among young people.
- Learning about the importance of the democratic system.
- Discovering the opportunities offered by European citizenship.
- Participating in school debates related to all the previous topics.
Within this framework, our students have had the opportunity to participate in a debate with other schools in the European Parliament Ambassador Schools Programme.
The Mayor of Sant Adrià del Besós, Ms. Filo Cañete Carrillo, introduced the first topic of debate: "Can a woman be President of the USA"? Our representatives, Ana Isún, Iñigo Garrido, Inés Santolària and Jordi Krugman, had to defend the position that a woman CANNOT hold this position in the USA, arguing that the society is not yet culturally prepared for such a change, which would imply innovation with too much risk for the present. The opposing team argued that a person's ability does not depend on their gender, but on their skills.
Next, Mr. Carlos Garnacho, Director of the technology department and language teacher at the host school, gave a presentation on artificial intelligence (AI), introducing the following question for the next debate between two centers, one in Les Palmes and the another from the town of Tomelloso: "Will AI have a positive or negative impact on education?". Both schools defended and rebutted their positions until the conclusion of the debate.
At the end of the event, the participants from each centre received a small gift and a commemorative photograph of the conference.
This highly rewarding experience has shaped the students' growth and development. They will always recognise the honour and privilege of being part of the event.
