Life in a Jar, a science and technology project for Lower Secondary Year 1

Can we create a small world inside a jar which survives on its own?

Can we create a small, balanced ecosystem which self-regulates?

Lower Secondary Year 1 pupils are engaged in the Life in a Jar project. This science and technology project involves studying ecosystems: what they are, what types there are, what components they are made up of and how they relate to each other.

Inspired by a YouTube channel exploring this topic, the pupils build small closed ecosystems to analyse the factors affecting their balance and thus develop sustainable habits.

They also design ecosystem simulators, investigate how human actions impact nature and draw up ten principles for conservation actions.

This activity blends science, technology and sustainability to raise awareness of the importance of looking after the environment and maintaining the ecological balance.

Through observation, experimentation and critical thinking, Year 1 pupils will not only gain a better understanding of ecosystems but also learn to act responsibly to preserve them.

The project is rounded off by making a final video and drawing up ten best practices to inspire the community.
