Problematic smartphone use

Learning to use your smartphone effectively is now one of the most important skills in our daily lives.

Today at tutorial time, Upper Secondary Year 1 students welcomed Joan Manuel Batista Foguet, a lecturer at Esade Business School (URL), who presented the project Raising student awareness about problematic smartphone (SP) use, a key topic exploring the impact of smartphones on attention and concentration and promoting self-awareness and self-control for healthier and more critical use of mobile phones.

This research project is led by Esade Business School and involves several Spanish, European and American universities. It seeks to draw up a suite of observable indicators to evaluate our actual behaviour in terms of smartphone use.

Joan M. Batista Foguet is a lecturer in the Department of People Management and Organisation at Esade and director of the Leadership Development Research Centre (GLEAD), which is engaged in helping people, teams and organisations unlock their leadership potential. His areas of interest include research design, measurement optimisation in the social sciences, learning and developing emotional skills, learning spaces, service quality and quality of life, subjects on which he has published numerous articles in leading scientific journals.

Before joining Esade in 1989, he was a lecturer and associate professor of Statistics at the Barcelona School of Engineering (UPC) and associate professor in the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Barcelona.
