Selected in the CanSat competition

The Year 1 Upper Secondary students making up the Polar CanSat team, Carlos, Ricardo, Ignasi, Martina, Martí and Maria, are engaged in the CanSat project, a competition run by the European Space Agency (ESA), ESERO and the UPC for designing and building small satellites to spark interest in technology and science among students right across Europe.

The team, tutored by the Upper Secondary industrial technology and physics teacher, has successfully completed two stages of the competition and been selected from 60 teams to be one of the 18 which will have the chance to launch the satellite using a small rocket.

The purpose of their project is to develop a CanSat. This is a satellite the size of a can and which is able to conduct scientific measurements while descending from a height of approximately 1000 metres. The project has two main missions:

1. Measuring atmospheric variables: temperature, pressure, humidity and speed of descent.

2. Ultraviolet radiation monitoring: to assess its impact on biodiversity and the risk of fires in the study area.

Besides the technological challenge, this project is a unique chance to expand scientific knowledge and gain experience in aerospace, technology and telecommunications.
