Tourism has been and still is a core component of our economy and has become a driving force for fundamental social, cultural and mindset changes. Efforts are being made to replace mass tourism with tourism that is responsible and respectful of the environment and local people.
Given these changes, how can we guide families to organise a sustainable trip around Spain?
In the Spain is Different project, Primary Year 6 students find out about Spain's regions, their traits and some aspects of their landscapes. They also become aware of the importance of sustainable tourism.
The Spain is Different project asks our students to produce sustainable travel guides to foster respect and social cooperation for a sustainable development model.
The Year 6 students are divided into groups to become experts on a region by researching its cuisine, sights, cultural activities and more. They also explore tourism as a driving force for change in Spain coupled with its political and physical geography, unpack what we are like as tourists, where and how we travel and the economic sectors involved (especially the tertiary sector and tourism), in particular looking at the beginnings of the tourist boom through films and advertising and the future challenges for responsible tourism.
Finally, and bearing in mind sustainability and the ecological footprint, each group summarises all the lessons learned in a travel guide which they present to their classmates and families.
At the end of the project, the students discuss and evaluate the journey they have gone on to answer the initial question: Is another kind of tourism possible?
