LET'S DO MATHS is designed to help Primary Year 5 and 6 and all Lower Secondary students to build up their maths skills. It also enables teachers from all over Catalonia to exchange experiences and share ideas. Furthermore, it raises awareness in Catalan society as a whole about the need to improve maths education which fosters personal development and the social inclusion of free and responsible citizens.

The activity is organised every year by FEEMCAT with the backing of the Ministry of Education. It is addressed to all Year 5 and 6 Primary and Year 1 and 2 Lower Secondary students at schools in Catalonia. A new feature this year is that Year 3 and 4 Lower Secondary students will also take part. The activity allows students to enter the National Maths Olympiad organised by FESPM (see Stage three below for more information).

Let's Do Maths is held as a competition over three stages.

This initiative’s purpose is to:

  • Foster mathematical reasoning through problem-solving.
  • Unlock communication skills and mathematical argumentation by presenting activities to be done in teams and requiring them to produce detailed reports.
  • Help boys and girls to gain confidence and self-belief in their ability to do maths by giving them motivating and challenging activities.

It also shows teachers activities connected with their surroundings coupled with appropriate problems for working on strategies and generating positive attitudes towards maths.

Well done to all the students who took part!
